Solution Architect

  • Hybrid
    • Brussels, Brussels, Belgium
  • Development & IT Operations

Job description

itsme® has fundamentally changed how people lead their digital lives in Belgium, but we are not stopping there! Do you want to be a driving force to help expand on this success story as part of a talented team that is making a positive impact on society? Then keep on reading, you’ll probably like what you’ll see.

We are itsme®, one of Europe’s fastest-growing scale-ups, counting 90 team members and growing. Our mission: providing a state-of-the-art digital identity solution to all people, enabling them to interact securely in the digital space. Now, only five years after being founded, close to 8 million citizens use the itsme® app, to identify themselves and sign documents online. Starting in Belgium, we successfully launched the itsme app in 17 European countries, with the ambition of becoming an internationally leading player.

As a Solution Architect, you are the link between business needs and technical execution. You ensure roadmap concepts are feasible, sequenced logically, and translated into actionable, end-to-end solution designs. You work across value streams, bridging product, security, infrastructure and enterprise IT, making sure our solutions are robust, future-proof, and deliver value efficiently.

You combine impact assessment with solution exploration: diversifying options, assessing trade-offs, and shaping transition paths that guide delivery teams while preserving autonomy.

What your job looks like

End-to-End Solution Design

  • Produce logical and physical solution designs across applications, integrations, and infrastructure.

  • Tailor non-functional requirements (NFRs) such as security, performance, compliance, and availability.

  • Define and maintain integration guidelines and system-wide principles.

Separation of Concerns & Component Roles

  • Define clear responsibilities, boundaries, and interfaces for components (domain, orchestration, integration, protocol/interface).

  • Ensure maintainability and avoid overlap by clarifying roles and responsibilities in system decomposition.

  • Support transitions from monoliths to modular/microservice architectures.

Solution Alternatives & Trade-offs

  • Ensure solution diversification and structured trade-off assessment.

  • Provide clear recommendations backed by transparent rationale in ADRs (Architecture Decision Records).

Transition & Roadmap Support

  • Provide transitional architecture patterns and high-level sequencing plans to de-risk delivery.

  • Pre-wire initiatives in governance (e.g., Portfolio Committee) to prevent surprises and improve decision-making.

Decision Tracking & Standards

  • Maintain an ADR repository and trade-off rationale.

  • Align solutions with product guardrails, zero-trust security practices, and architectural modelling conventions (C4, ArchiMate).

Enablement over Control

  • Apply “just-enough architecture”: more guardrails and standards where maturity is low; lighter guidance where teams are seasoned.

Strategic Support

  • Support Enterprise Architects in impact analyses for acquisitions, new tooling integration, or strategic shifts.

Job requirements

  • Proven experience as a Solution Architect (or similar role) in SaaS or other high-availability environments.

  • Strong background in software engineering and system integration.

  • Experience with API design, microservices architectures, and decomposing monoliths.

  • Familiarity with mobile applications, distributed systems, and secure data flows.

  • Skilled in NFR engineering (availability, compliance, performance, security) and transition planning under delivery constraints.

  • Comfortable leading option generation and trade-off discussions, even with incomplete information.

  • Excellent communication skills: able to translate complex technical trade-offs into clear guidance for both engineering and business stakeholders.

  • Plus: experience with TOGAF, C4, ArchiMate; knowledge of digital identity, and experience in high-compliance/security environments.

  • Language skills: fully proficient in English and native in Dutch or French

What we offer

  • Being welcomed by an informal, enthusiastic, and ambitious team that is revolutionising how we safely manage our digital identity, in Belgium & beyond.

  • Offices within walking distance from Brussels Central Station, with the possibility to work remotely 3 days a week.

  • A contract of indefinite duration, with an attractive compensation package.

  • An environment where we care a lot about our core values:

    • Integrity: being fair, honest & transparent so that we can be trusted.

    • Inclusiveness: being an open environment in which all team members' opinions are taken into account.

    • Innovation: building future-proof solutions by finding new ideas and methods to solve problems.
