Job description

itsme® has fundamentally changed how people lead their digital lives in Belgium, but we are not stopping there! Do you want to be a driving force to help expand on this success story as part of a talented team that is making a positive impact on society? Then keep on reading, you’ll probably like what you’ll see.

We are itsme®, one of Europe’s fastest-growing scale-ups, with 150 team members and growing. Our mission: to provide a state-of-the-art digital identity solution for all people, enabling them to interact securely in the digital space. Now, only nine years after being founded, close to 8 million citizens use the itsme® app to identify themselves and sign documents online. Starting in Belgium, we successfully launched the itsme app in 32 European countries, with the ambition of becoming an internationally leading player.

We are looking for a curious, humble and business-minded legal entrepreneur who wants to help shape how itsme® grows. You will work closely with the business to understand its ambitions, spot opportunities early and make risks visible, manageable and proportionate. With sound legal judgement and a pragmatic mindset, you will help teams move forward with confidence and raise the legal maturity of the organisation. You will also take ownership of a broad range of commercial, corporate, privacy and intellectual property matters, always with the wider business objective in mind.

How you will make an impact

·  Enable the business: Build a deep understanding of itsme®’s products, customers and strategic ambitions. Engage early with teams, ask the right questions and translate legal complexity into clear options that help the business make informed decisions and move forward.

·  Identify opportunities and manage risk: Look beyond compliance and assess both the upside and downside of initiatives. Help stakeholders distinguish material risks from theoretical ones, define proportionate safeguards and find workable paths to achieve business objectives.

·  Commercial contracting and negotiation: Draft, review and negotiate client, supplier, partnership and technology agreements. Structure balanced, scalable solutions that protect itsme® while supporting growth, speed and sustainable relationships.

·  Support product, privacy and innovation: Advise on GDPR, privacy and wider legal questions connected to products and new initiatives. Work with relevant stakeholders to embed legal thinking early and turn regulatory requirements into practical and commercially viable solutions.

·  Strengthen legal maturity: Improve templates, guidance, processes and ways of working so that Legal becomes more proactive, consistent and scalable. Share knowledge and help the wider organisation build confidence in recognising and managing legal risk.

·  Take ownership across the legal agenda: Coordinate disputes and external counsel, support intellectual property strategy and portfolio management, contribute to corporate governance and entity management, and coordinate corporate insurance matters. Approach each area with sound judgement, curiosity and a focus on business impact.

Job requirements

·  You are genuinely curious about how the business works and motivated to understand products, technology, customers and strategic priorities—not only the legal question presented to you.

· You are humble and open-minded: you listen, ask thoughtful questions, challenge constructively and are comfortable admitting when you need to learn or involve others.

·  You think in terms of opportunities, choices and proportionate risks. You do not stop at identifying a problem; you help devise a practical way forward.

· You communicate legal advice clearly and concisely, using language that enables decision-making rather than creating unnecessary complexity.

· You combine strong ownership and independent judgement with a collaborative approach and the confidence to engage stakeholders at all levels.

· You have a Master’s degree in Law and 5-8 years of relevant experience gained in a law firm and/or an in-house role, ideally in a technology-driven or fast-growing environment.

· You have solid experience in commercial contracting and a sound grounding in areas such as data protection, intellectual property, disputes, corporate governance or insurance. You do not need to be a specialist in every field, but you are eager and able to develop quickly.

· You have full professional proficiency in English and native-level Dutch.
